Microneedling is gaining popularity in the world of skincare and cosmetic treatments. So what is microneedling and how does it work? We’ll go over some of the basics about this trendy treatment and whether or not it may be suited for your skincare goals.
What is microneedling?
Microneedling is a nonsurgical technique that is performed to improve skin texture by reducing any “crepey” appearances, minimizing fine lines and wrinkles, and reducing the hyperpigmentation of the skin. It is a form of collagen induction created by a mechanical force delivered to the dermis. It also is useful for improving acne scars or pockmarks and can even weld stretch marks together by creating collagen bridging.
The microneedling process at Oasis Medical Spa in Bloomington IL utilizes a power hand-piece to create tiny channels into the dermis of the skin which initiates the body’s natural healing process to create collagen and elastin.
How many treatments do I need?
The technique of microneedling is very similar to the technology of the Fraxel laser. Each treatment creates channels in the dermis. Like the laser takes a series of treatments to work, so does microneedling. It can take anywhere from three to six sessions depending on your skin’s needs. During your consultation, we can determine how many sessions will be right for you and your skin needs. After we’ve achieved the final results we’re aiming for, we typically recommend one or two sessions a year to maintain the results desired.
How much downtime is there?
Typically, after your first session, you can expect to experience redness for around five days. But after your first day, you can wear makeup to help minimize the appearance of redness. Many patients continue with their usual routine after the first day or so. Some patients may experience slight burning, tightness, and mild flaking. Noticeable differences in the texture of your skin will occur after a couple of weeks.
