Many women are bothered by the appearance of their vaginal lips. This is unfortunate, as it can make you feel uneasy when in intimate situations. In other cases, the labia can interfere with activities such as cycling or can be painful during intercourse.
Labiaplasty with the team at Twin City Plastic Surgery can reduce and shape a woman’s labia minora and majora. If you are interested in labiaplasty surgery, contact our office in Bloomington IL today to schedule an appointment.
What is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a minor surgical procedure to improve the appearance of a woman’s external genitalia. The most common need is to reduce the labia minora, the inner genital lips. These can overhang the outer lips (labia majora), or appear uneven or overly thick. Beyond appearance, overhanging labia minora can create rubbing and chafing during activities such as cycling or they can appear bulky when wearing certain types of clothing.
Who is a Good Candidate for Labiaplasty?
The reasons for desiring labiaplasty are completely unique — there isn’t a “set” reason to want to make a change. Your reasons could be cosmetic to overcome a perception that your vaginal lips are unappealing, or they could be functional to eliminate the pain when having intercourse, riding a bike or wearing yoga pants.
Whatever your individual reasons for wanting labiaplasty, this procedure does not entail a difficult recovery.
How is Labiaplasty Done?
As with every surgical procedure with our three surgeons at Twin City Plastic Surgery, we tailor the methods used to your unique needs. The most common need is to reduce the labia minora, which are located inside the labia majora. The goal is to reduce the length and size of these tissues.
Generally, one of two methods is appropriate. In a “wedge incision,” a vertical wedge of labia minora tissue is removed. In an “edge incision,” tissue is removed along the edge of the lips. Often, extra folds of the clitoral hood are also reduced during the procedure.
In some cases, the outer lips, the labia majora, may be larger than is comfortable. This can be physically or emotionally uncomfortable for a woman. We remove an elliptical-pattern piece of tissue through a small, hidden incision.
What Will My Recovery Be Like?
When you return home after your surgery, you will have some swelling and pain. This can be mitigated by icing for 20 minutes on and then 20 minutes off for the first one to two days. You’ll need to take it easy for the first five days after surgery, limiting your activity. Exercise will generally have to wait for two to three weeks. Sexual intercourse needs to wait for at least 4-6 weeks after your surgery. Engaging in sex too soon presents a risk of tearing the incisions. Tampons need to be avoided for six weeks, as well. If more minor changes were made, your recovery may not be as involved.
When Can I Resume Sexual Activity After Labiaplasty?
During the early part of your recovery, you won’t feel like having sex. From there, you’ll still need to proceed with caution. Sexual intercourse cannot happen for from 4-6 weeks after this surgery, and it could be up to two months. This is very important, as it’s possible to tear your incisions.
What Can I Expect for Results from This Procedure?
Your results are immediate, but there will be some swelling. In a week or two your results should be fully realized. Most patients have reduced chafing and physical discomfort, an improved sex life, and a boost in confidence.
Will I Lose Sensation from Labiaplasty?
Risks with labiaplasty are low due to the highly vascular nature of this area. Risks are for potential chronic dryness, possible pain during intercourse, and loss of sensation. Loss of sensation is rare, but is a higher risk with extensive tissue removal.
