Get rid of your double chin with KYBELLA®
KYBELLA® is a prescription medicine and is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called “double chin.” The board-certified plastic surgeons at Twin City Plastic Surgery serving Bloomington, Champaign, Springfield, Peoria, and Decatur, IL, can consult with you to find out if you are a candidate for this injection.
Candidates for KYBELLA®
Generally, KYBELLA® may be right for you if:
- You are bothered (unhappy, self-conscious, embarrassed) by fat under the chin, also known as submental fullness.
- You feel the condition makes you look older or heavier than you actually are.
- You don’t want to have surgery.
- You eat well and exercise, but submental fullness does not go away.
How KYBELLA® Works
The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is synthetic deoxycholic acid. This acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, KYBELLA® will destroy fat cells, resulting in a noticeable reduction in mass under the chin. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not expected once you reach your desired aesthetic goal.
What are the benefits of KYBELLA®?
Kybella® is amazing because it does what formerly could only be done through a neck lift: it reduces the sagging under your chin that has created a double chin or at least ruined the definition of your profile. By attacking and destroying the fat cells that have taken up residence under your jaw, Kybella® slims your profile to an amazing degree.
And it does this without a stitch or a minute of recovery time. Kybella® can cause some swelling, particularly after the first injection session, but this resolves in a few days to a couple of weeks. Then as it works to reduce the fat, your profile returns to how it looked in your younger days.
Doctors need specific training to administer Kybella®. Drs. Holt, Randolph, and Tattini have had this training. During your treatment, we inject Kybella® with a very tiny needle into numerous locations under the chin. The session takes just 15-20 minutes, and patients report that they feel little more than a slight pinprick with each injection.
Can KYBELLA® be used on more than the chin?
It’s tempting to think of using the fat destroying capabilities of Kybella® in other areas such as the abdomen. You may have even heard other practices offering such injections on areas other than the jowls. We do not offer that off-label use at Twin City Plastic Surgery. Research is ongoing, but at this point the FDA has only approved Kybella® for use on double chins.
How long after a KYBELLA® injection session will I see my results?
You will probably have some swelling after your Kybella® injections. The more fat that has accumulated in the area, the more likely you are to have swelling. Your results will begin to really show themselves from 4-6 weeks after your treatment. That gives the body time to break down and remove most of the fat cells. Those results will continue to improve as your skin tightens down without the fat.
How long will my results from KYBELLA® last?
Kybella® destroys fat cells. These are permanent reductions. Plus, by destroying the fat cells it limits your body’s ability to store fat under the chin. As you continue to age, your skin will loosen somewhat under your chin — that’s inevitable — but without the fat to weigh it down you won’t see this as a double chin. After having Kybella treatment, you’ll love your tighter, more defined profile for decades.
How many KYBELLA® sessions will I need?
The FDA has set the maximum number of Kybella® treatments at six. But how you respond to Kybella® is unique to you. At Twin City Plastic Surgery, we have found that, on average, most patients are satisfied after three treatments. Other patients opt for all six. It really depends on how slim you want your profile.
The time between treatments is supposed to be four weeks, as this allows Kybella® to fully do its thing before having the next set of injections. We believe five to six weeks apart is a better degree of spacing. This allows your results from the previous injection session to fully show themselves before deciding to go ahead with another round.
What are the side effects of KYBELLA®?
The main side effect after these injections is swelling. The amount of swelling usually is directly related to how much fat the person has in the area. The majority of swelling occurs after the first injection session (remember, you can have up to six sessions).
Serious side effects have proven rare with Kybella®, but there is a possibility of nerve injury in the jaw. This can lead to an uneven smile, trouble swallowing, and weakness in the surrounding facial muscles. In 20 clinical studies involving over 1600 patients, these issues resolved themselves over a period of a couple weeks.
The common side effects are similar to those with dermal fillers:
- Residual pain
- Areas of hardness in the injection sites
Are KYBELLA® injections painful?
The needle used by our Twin City plastic surgeons to inject Kybella® is very small. Most patients don’t require any anesthetic, saying the multiple injections are akin to slight pinpricks. The skin under your chin is not overly sensitive. But, if you like, we can apply some topical anesthetic prior to your session.
