Juvederm Injectable Gel

juvederm-92Juvéderm® is a type of facial injectable filler made of hyaluronic acid. It is used to correct moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles with results lasting approximately nine months. This dermal filler is not to be used in lip augmentation.

Juvederm is known for its smooth consistency, which makes it unique from other hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, which have a granular consistency. It utilizes a Hylacross technology that is responsible for its smooth and malleable properties. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally produced by the body that has the ability to retain water, acting as a cushioning agent in the areas around the injection sites. Juvederm adds volume to the skin and improves its overall appearance.

What to Expect during Juvederm Treatment

After the doctor has assessed the patient’s skin type and has taken the patient’s goals into consideration, the administration of Juvederm will start.

Before the start of the treatment, the injector may use a topical or injectable anesthesia to numb the skin, minimizing discomfort once the procedure has started. A type of Juvederm called Juvederm XC (extra comfort) is a new product that already contains a local anesthetic called lidocaine, making the administration of a separate anesthetic agent unnecessary.

Juvederm is then injected under the skin using a fine needle to fill areas in the face that have lost volume. Juvederm is also used to smooth away unflattering wrinkles, folds, and fine lines. After the injections, the treated areas may be massaged gently. This treatment can be completed in 15 minutes to one hour, depending on the areas that need treatment.

Recovery from Juvederm Treatment

The patient may be advised to avoid performing strenuous exercises and excessive sun exposure for the next 24 hours. The patient may also be advised to avoid smoking and alcoholic beverages while recovering. Following these instructions carefully is important in order to avoid temporary redness, itching, or swelling on the treated sites. If swelling occurs, an ice pack can be applied over the area to alleviate it.
