Facelift is a surgical procedure that aims to treat sagging, wrinkled, and drooping skin on the face and/or the neck. This procedure may be done alone or in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures such as a forehead lift and nose reshaping, to achieve better results.
An individual will benefit more from a facelift if aging has made his or her face saggy and wrinkled; stress could also be a factor in the formation of folds in the neck and deep creases between the mouth and the nose. A facelift repairs the visible signs of aging, giving the patient a more refreshed and younger-looking appearance.
Basic Facelift Procedure
Every facelift will be slightly different since each face is contoured individually. However, before any facelift procedure, one of our board-certified plastic surgeons at Twin City Plastic Surgery will evaluate and assess the consistency of the patient’s skin as he or she explains the entire process. The patient may be given certain pre-procedure instructions that have to be complied several weeks before surgery to achieve the best possible results.
Before the surgery starts, the patient may be put under local anesthesia and sedation to promote comfort throughout the procedure. A traditional facelift involves making an incision from the temple to around the hairline. An incision may also be made under one’s chin to tighten the skin around the neck. Liposuction may also be done to trim down excess fat around the treated areas, giving the face a much sleeker look.
After incisions are made, the doctor will pull the skin back up and remove unnecessary skin using laser or a knife. The cuts are then closed using sutures, stitches, or tissue glue. The whole facelift surgery usually takes two to four hours to perform.
Recovering From A Facelift
After the procedure, a drainage tube may be placed under the patient’s skin, and the head may be loosely wrapped in bandages to alleviate swelling and bruising. In case of any discomfort, pain medications can be taken as prescribed by the doctor. Numbness around the treated area is normal and will fade in about a few weeks to a month.
