Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most common types of plastic surgeries that we do at Twin City Plastic Surgery. By physically enhancing your breast size and shape, a breast augmentation can make you feel and look better than you ever imagined. However, just like with any surgical procedure, it can be a bit frightening to think about getting work done. Read on to learn the answers to some frequently asked questions regarding breast augmentation surgery.
How Long Does It Take?
Unfortunately, there is no definitive answer to this question because depending on the patient, the breast implants, and any other work that may be getting done, the time to completion can drastically vary. However, it’s safe to say that on average, a breast augmentation alone takes around 1-3 hours. Once you are out of surgery, you will be sent to recover and be monitored for another hour or two.
Are Implants Placed Above or Below the Muscle?
Depending on the current anatomy of your breasts and the overall look you are going for, you can choose to have your implants placed either above or below the chest muscle. Either option is safe and efficient, but the placement will need to be discussed before your surgery date. To get a more natural look, some patients like to have their implants placed below the muscle, but you can still get a similar look if it’s placed above it.
What Is Recovery Like?
As one of the most important parts of the entire surgical procedure, full recovery from a breast augmentation takes about 2-3 weeks. However, you can get back into most things after about a day or two of rest (not including exercising). And then after about a week, you can get back into some forms of exercising. During recovery, you will be encouraged to wear a compression bra for the first week and should avoid strenuous activity until you get the go-ahead from your doctor.
