The Aging Face: It’s a Work in Progress

Age is more than a result of passing time. It is a reflection of lessons learned, chances taken, and victories enjoyed. In addition to giving ourselves a pat on the back for making it this far, many of us also feel disheartened at the way that age has affected our appearance. It is not so much age exactly that causes lines and wrinkles, but a combination of various factors.

The environment and our skin. One of the primary causes of premature aging is exposure to ultraviolet light. As research has pointed to this fact, we have seen a major shift in people’s tanning habits. It is important to understand that small doses of sunshine, preferably in the early morning hours, are essential to the natural production of vitamin D. However, this typically means just 10 to 20 minutes of early morning sunlight. Anything more, without adequate protection, causes a breakdown in the collagen fibers that support overlying skin to appear smooth and youthful.

Stress. If only we could avoid the chronic stresses that most of us encounter on a daily basis. Alas, this may be as difficult to discover as the proverbial fountain of youth. When we are stressed, we are less likely to make sure we remain hydrated. We may reach for coffee or soda instead of a refreshing glass of water. As a result, our skin becomes dehydrated, and it becomes thin and fragile. Stress also robs us of the sleep that we need for our cells to regenerate efficiently. When we are stressed and we do not sleep, we suffer from problems such as sagging skin, and bags beneath the eyes.
